This is a captivating, beautiful YA novel that explores family, sexuality, identity, and dealing with a loved one's mental illness with compassion and insight, but also with raw honesty in depicting the realities of Suzette's life. This was the rare contemporary fiction YA that I couldn't put down and read in one sitting.

Phoebe meets Marigold when she accidentally hits her with a rock. Magical misadventures follow as the unicorn whose favorite activity is staring at herself in a pond becomes best friends with this scrappy, nerdy kid that isn't above asking for a little magical aid for her problems, even when it inevitably goes wrong. Like Calvin and Hobbes for the 21st century.

Mischa Abramavicius is the perfect student, so why have all of her college applications (even her safety school!) ended in rejections? Is it a sign that she’s thrown all her eggs in the wrong academic basket? Or is she the victim of a cruel conspiracy? Maybe it’s a bit of both. Kaplan’s follow-up to Grendel’s Guide to Love and War (go read that too, it’s great) is the perfect back-to-school read, expertly blending the whip-smart dialogue of Gilmore Girls with some classic, hard-boiled detective work.

This is my favorite book right now. In Mirage, Somaiya Daud has crafted a beautiful fantasy (which seamlessly features some sci-fi concepts). The characters feel so alive. The setting and cultures, inspired by her Moroccan heritage, are intricate, beautiful, and refreshingly unique. The story is rich and engaging, but also succinct.

If you put the Muppets in a theme park and added the heart of Steven Universe and some paranormal energy, you'd get Deadendia. It's an awesome mixture of humor, friendship, self-discovery, and drama with flawed characters you will love as much as your best friends. Heart-warming, heartbreaking, heart-pounding, and heartfelt!

Goldfarb reports on the alliance of scientists, environmentalists, ranchers, and concerned citizens organizing to restoring beaver populations in an effort to solve a host of environmental problems their absence exasperated. Read this book and you will look at our contemporary landscapes in an entirely new way and you may become a Beaver Believer too.

How do you write poetry when the language you’re supposed to write in excludes you? How do you find your voice when at least some of the world denies you even exist? In feeld, Charles invades these questions by building an alternative English, one closer to the overt grammatical chaos of Middle English, that allows for a different kind of exploration into how we make languaged-meaning from who we are as people.

Don't be fooled - this book is about seaweed but it's really about the whole Gulf of Maine ecosystem - the plants and animals that make it up and the people and corporations who farm, protect, fish, conserve and love this extraordinary and increasingly threatened habitat. And a special bonus - the author will be speaking at PSB on October 9.

The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three older sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving heir. A compelling character in a fascinating fantasy world!

One part sexy rogue’s tale, one part intellectual exploration of the nature of history, one part examination of how people are marginalized by the powerful, all wrapped up in a tale of frustrated love and surveillance, this wild novel wriggles through genres, tones, and themes like a Dickensian pickpocket disappearing into a crowded London street. You won’t read anything like it this year. One of my favorite books of 2018.

I'm an adult, and I should read this keeping in mind the importance of education, and how things that seemed hard years ago weren't that hard in hindsight. But that being said I, like the protagonist, spent many, many days in grade school doing homework from the moment I got home until I went to bed. So I found this book extremely satisfying.
